Summer may be almost over, but the fun in San Diego is just getting started. With a temperate climate all year, San Diego is perfect for family fun no matter what season it is. To get started, consider the following family-friendly festivities in 2013.

1. Julian Apple Days Festival. Fall is the time to harvest, and there is no sweeter way to celebrate the autumn than the Julian Apple Days Festival. This family-oriented festival is held at Menghini Winery in Julian, California. The event spans two days and features a number of fun-filled activities including an antique tractor display, gold panning, children’s games and more. There is plenty of live music and dancing, and everyone loves the apple-themed activities to top off the event. This year’s festival is October 1-2.

2. Oktoberfest in La Mesa. Even families without German heritage can find something fun during Oktoberfest. This yearly tradition is celebrated throughout the world, but La Mesa holds its own event with all things German. Guests can listen to Bavarian bands, try some German arts and crafts and eat all the classic German food they could want. There are also a number of commercial vendors on hand, making it a popular event for the whole family. With 40 years of tradition, this spectacular Oktoberfest welcomes over 200,000 guests each year. Celebrate in 2013 in La Mesa on October 2-3.

3. Little Italy Precious Festa. On October 9, be sure to head downtown San Diego to Little Italy for the Annual Little Italy Precious Festa. This event has been running for 17 years now, and with one visit, it is easy to see why. The Little Italy Precious Festa has everything from Italian music to decadent cuisine. However, the highlight of the event is probably “Gesso Italiano,” which is a traditional method of street-painting, brought straight from the streets of Italy to the heart of San Diego.

4. San Diego Asian Film Festival. With such close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, San Diego has a strong Asian population. This is one reason why the San Diego Asian Film Festival is such an exciting event. This festival is the largest of its kind in all of North America, featuring over 140 films with strong ties to Asian culture. This important cultural event has been running for 12 years. Check out this year’s selection the week of October 20 at the UltraStar Mission Valley Cinema in the Hazard Center.

5. Borrego Days Desert Festival. Most people do not associate the desert with fun, but that is not the case at the Annual Borrego Days Desert Festival. Borrego Springs is located near the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, which is the largest state park in California. Borrego Springs is proud of this location and uses the Borrego Days Desert Festival to honor this distinctive and impressive landscape. Go with the family to try out arts, crafts and other fun activities. The festival has a yearly parade and features the Miss Borrego Springs Pageant. Celebrate in 2013 during the weekend of October 29.

6. San Diego Beer Week. Culture and nature have their place, but there are few things better for celebrating than beer. San Diego Beer Week is an annual event that features everyone’s favorite brew. There are countless beer-themed activities and events, and guests can try some of San Diego’s specialty craft beers from local breweries and favorite pubs in the area. This ten-day extravaganza starts on November 4.

7. San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival. For a more upscale experience, the San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival may be the proper November stop in 2013. California has some of the best options for wine in North America, and some of the finest wineries are located near San Diego. Guests will appreciate some of the best local wines and other fine foods during this festival. In fact, over 200 wineries and breweries will be represented, and 70 restaurants will be featured. The activities take place at a handful of locations in downtown San Diego, giving guests the perfect backdrop for this culinary exploration. Stop by for the 2013 gathering starting on November 16.

8. Mother Goose Parade. As fall starts to approach winter, everyone starts thinking about the holidays. With Thanksgiving and Christmas approaching, families can get into the festive spirit by attending the Annual Mother Goose Parade. This family-friendly parade is a full-on spectacle with ornate floats, live bands, entertaining clowns and exquisite equestrians. Many people also enjoy the special celebrity appearances, which are a hit with the young and the old alike. To get started on the 2013 holiday season, be sure to make time for the Annual Mother Goose Parade on November 20 in El Cajon.

9. San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival. There is always something to be thankful for in Southern California, and there is no better way to foster that appreciation than by attending the San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival. This musical event takes place from November 23 through November 27, making it a must-visit during Thanksgiving weekend. The festivities feature bands from across the country, and guests can enjoy performances in large concert halls with plenty of room for dancing or smaller venues for a more intimate experience. This festival has been running for over 30 years, and the 2013 celebration will be at the Town & Country Resort and Convention Center in San Diego’s popular Mission Valley.

If these nine events are not enough, there are plenty of other options to consider. With so many choices, families can stay busy every week during the fall, ensuring that no one has to feel bored.
